LA provost Jack Scott announced a new security policy was being instituted on Pepperdine's LA campus: gates at the entrances to campus would be locked daily at 3pm. The move came as part of an ongoing effort to boost security on campus following some violent crimes in the fall 1971 term. In an attempt to provide a healthy outlet for youth in the neighborhood, Scott also announced a new sports program hosted in the gymnasium.1
