In an effort to prevent erosion, Pepperdine students were sent out onto the hills surrounding the Malibu campus to sow grass seed. The campus's construction had stripped off the native chaparral, leaving the hills unstable before the coming rainy season.1 The Inter-Club Council organized an Ecology Day, during which members of the community wandered the hills with pillowcases of barley and rye donated by the Malibu Feed Bin,1 sowing the meadow that would become Alumni Park and Pepperdine's now-familiar lawn.2
