The brand-new Tyler Dining Room opened for its first meal on September 6, 1972, the day students arrived to Malibu. With 1,000 mouths to feed, there were just a few obstacles to overcome: like the fact that no appliances had been delivered except a meat slicer and a small refrigerator, or that the loading dock couldn't take deliveries, or that the kitchen floor had just been painted and could only be walked on in socks.¹

Despite these challenges, the team put together a meal of sandwiches, fruit, and coffee, served on paper plates. The Graphic quipped of the food service manager and his assistant, "Be thankful that these two met the challanges [sic] of their task [...] It's a long walk down the mountain to Colonel Sanders."¹
