First dinner in the caf is cold sandwiches
date Wednesday, September 6, 1972
location Malibu
The brand-new Tyler Dining Room opened for its first meal on September 6, 1972, the day students arrived to Malibu. With 1,000 mouths to feed, there were just a few obstacles to overcome: like the fact that no appliances had been delivered except a meat slicer and a small refrigerator, or that the loading dock couldn't take deliveries, or that the kitchen floor had just been painted and could only be walked on in socks.1
Despite these challenges, the team put together a meal of sandwiches, fruit, and coffee, served on paper plates. The Graphic quipped of the food service manager and his assistant, "Be thankful that these two met the challanges [sic] of their task [...] It's a long walk down the mountain to Colonel Sanders."1
