Pepperdine's men's volleyball coaches announced that Marv Dunphy, the captain of the volleyball team at Pierce College, would join the Waves in the fall.¹ Dunphy would go on to be one of the greatest figures in the history of Pepperdine athletics.

Joining Dunphy on the team were two new recruits who had been named "Co-Players of the Year" by the Southern California High School Volleyball Association, one of whom was quoted in The Graphic saying, "I decided on Pepperdine two years ago when I heard the campus would be located at Malibu Beach, and I didn't give it any more thought."¹
