Sophomore Randy Lowry won first place in a speech contest hosted by the Women's Christian Temperance Union. His victory earned him a $150 prize and a trip to Miami in September for the nationals of collegiate oratory.¹

Lowry would serve as president of the new student government organization on the Malibu campus in the fall of 1972. He later became a professor at the Pepperdine School of Law.
