Pepperdine's fall commencement exercises took place at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Among the 261 graduating students were four from the Malibu campus,¹ including Gualberto Escudero,² who would go on to become the coach of Pepperdine's women's tennis team beginning in 1978 and lasting for 30 years.

Less than seven months earlier, the Civic Auditorium had hosted the recording of comedian George Carlin's Class Clown, which featured the first performance of his famous "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" bit.
