Huntsinger donates giant eagle sculpture

date Friday, October 6, 1972

location Malibu

Fritz Huntsinger donated a lot to Pepperdine over the years (lending his name to the Huntsinger Academic Complex, which consists of Payson Library and Pendleton Learning Center), but one of his more interesting gifts was an 800-pound teak sculpture of an eagle, donated in the fall of 1972.

The piece has a 79-inch wingspan and stands twelve feet high (including its podium).1 Huntsinger commissioned the work on a trip to Taiwan,2 and it took eight months to complete.1 At the dedication of the Huntsinger Academic Complex, the eagle caught everyone's attention,3 and Huntsinger explained that the eagle represented "the academic freedom as taught at Pepperdine."2
