With the opening of Pepperdine's new campus, Malibu became a college town. The Malibu Times welcomed Pepperdine warmly, declaring "the beginning of a new era in Malibu" and calling the school "a great asset to Malibu."¹ Not everyone was so friendly, though, with some residents opposing the construction of the theme tower, and others worried about an influx of students.
