The main parking lot on Pepperdine's new Malibu campus was paved the day before students were set to arrive. The Graphic reported in its first issue from Malibu that the campus's construction was still underway right up to the deadline. Malibu provost Jerry Hudson said, "I had people telling me as late as August that there was no way it could be done."1
The main lot was larger in 1972 than it is today, as Smothers Theatre and the rest of the fine arts complex have eaten into the space over the years.
