Varsity track suspended indefinitely

Athletics costs were being cut across the board, but track was the only program to be shuttered.1 The team had produced 20 All-Americans in the decade preceding its cancellation.2
Athletic director Gary Colson explained that "It was the only thing we could drop and remain within WCAC guidelines,"2 referring to the West Coast Athletic Conference, which dropped "Athletic" from its name in 1989.
