Athletics costs were being cut across the board, but track was the only program to be shuttered.¹ The team had produced 20 All-Americans in the decade preceding its cancellation.²

Athletic director Gary Colson explained that "It was the only thing we could drop and remain within WCAC guidelines,"² referring to the West Coast Athletic Conference, which dropped "Athletic" from its name in 1989.
