Walter Glass raises flag on campus every day

date Friday, January 7, 1972

location Malibu

A letter to the editor of The Malibu Times praised the "majestic elegance" of the 100-foot flagpole erected in 1968 below today's Brock House. In answer to the letter writer's question about the flag, the Times specified that Pepperdine physical education instructor Walter Glass was responsible for raising and lowering the flag every day.1 Glass was one of the first Pepperdiners (and perhaps the first member of the faculty) to move to Malibu in advance of the opening of the new campus in September 1972. Glass's wife Betty sewed the flag's fraying edges, calling herself "the Pepperdine Betsy Ross."2
